FOSTER MECK - The bar of Blair County has among its members one of the best known citizens of the county of Altoona - J. Foster Meck, who is a member of the Altoona Board of Education, an active and public-spirited citizen and an attorney of high esteem. He is a director in the First National Bank of Altoona and is the bank's solicitor as well as being solicitor for the Standard Building and Loan Association and the Mutual Building and Loan Association, both of Altoona. He is prominent and active in clubs and fraternities and in civic affairs. J. Foster Meck was born in Altoona, March 1, 1877, the son of J. Frank Meck, a native of Carlisle, who was a painter and who died in 1908, and Catherine (Burkett) Meck, a native of Martinsburg, Blair County, who died in 1911. J. Foster Meck was educated in the public schools of Altoona, and prepared for the bar by reading law in the office of Craig and Bowers, prominent attorneys of Altoona. In 1898 he was admitted to the bar in Blair County and has been in continuous practice of general law since that year, maintaining offices in the Hutchinson Block in Altoona. For many years Mr. Meck was court stenographer for all Blair County courts, serving in Hollidaysburg, the county capital. In the practice of his profession and through his activities as a citizen, Mr. Meck became prominent in the city and county, and in recognition of his public spirit and ability, he was appointed a member of the Altoona Board of Education. He is a leader among corporation lawyers of the county, and he has an extensive practice among financial houses and banks. Mr. Meck is a member of the Free and Accepted Masons; Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite; several bodies of the York Rite, and the Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He is secretary of the Blair County Bar Association, and belongs to the Blairmont Country Club, Spruce Creek Rod and Gun Club, and the Altoona Chamber of Commerce. He and his family attend the Presbyterian Church in Altoona. Mr. Meck married Margaret Hazlett, a native of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, in 1905, and there are two children of this union: Regina C., and John Foster, Jr.
