SHAFFER - The most important, though one of the least considered features of an extensive concern like the Shaffer Stores Company, Inc., of Altoona, is the group of able and energetic men who are the back of the business, and who are putting their best plan and effort into its progress and success. To Clyde E. Shaffer is given the responsibility of the management of the wholesale department of the firm, and the steady and gradual expansion of the various details of that department and its consequent popularity and prosperity are due to the personal care and attention bestowed therein by him. Mr. Shaffer, besides, holds official place in other business organizations, and is a valued ally in all their activities. He is the son of G. W. Shaffer, president of the G. W. Shaffer Stores Company, Inc., and Margaret C. (Miller) Shaffer, (see preceding biography.) Clyde E. Shaffer was born October 13, 1896, at Altoona, where he attended the public and the high schools. His one business interest in view was that of being assistant to his father in the Shaffer Stores Company, Inc., and since 1923 he has been the treasurer of this company, and manager and buyer in the wholesale department. The company was originated by G. W. Shaffer, and further information of the company is given in the preceding biography. Clyde E. Shaffer is also a member of the board of directors of the G. W. Shaffer Building and Loan Association, and he is secretary of the Pennsylvania Real Estate and Insurance Company. His fraternal affiliations are with the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. His religious faith is that of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Shaffer married September 12, 1916, Kathryn Shaffer, born in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, daughter of C. J. Shaffer, of Altoona, Pennsylvania.
