SNYDER - Active in the public life of Hollidaysburg, and a veteran lawyer of that borough and Blair County, John M. Snyder, a member of one of the oldest families in the State and the United States, is a foremost citizen of the county. He is director of schools of the county capital, is prominent in the County and State bars, and rendered valuable service to the United States Government during the World War in fuel administration work. He is prominent in fraternal circles, and is active in organizations of many corporations. John M. Snyder was born in Junction City, Kansas, March 8, 1869, the son of Harrison H. Snyder, a native of Hollidaysburg, and a prominent lawyer of the borough and county, who was a veteran of the Civil War, having served in the 62nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment, and he was a member of the William G. Murray Post, No. 39, of the Grand Army of the Republic, in Hollidaysburg, and of the Veterans Legion until his death in 1891. He married Ella M. Dipner, a native of Hollidaysburg, who died in 1916. The Snyder family are descended lineally from John Bauer, a captain in the Revolutionary War, and who was a native of Lancaster County, and a resident until his death of Mifflin County. John M. Snyder was educated in the grade and high schools of Hollidaysburg and in Lafayette College. He read law in the offices of William I. Woodcock, in Hollidaysburg, and was admitted to the Blair County bar in 1896. With offices at No. 313 1/2 Allegheny Street, in the county capital, he has been in practice since that year. Where his famous ancestor and his father served their country in time of need with military duty, Mr. Snyder served it during the World War, as chairman of the fuel commission of Clearfield County, performing such notable work to receive an official citation. His education and interest in educational work was recognized by the borough when he was elected director of schools of Hollidaysburg. Mr. Snyder is Past Master of Juniata Lodge, No. 282, Free and Accepted Masons; he is Past High Priest of Mount Marie Chapter, No. 166, of the Royal Arch Masons; and he is a member of Mountain Cornmandery, Knights Templar; and Jaffa Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He also has memberships in the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution, in the Blair County Bar Association, the Pennsylvania State Bar Association; the American Bar Association, the Blairmont Country Club, and others. The Snyder family are communicants of the Episcopal Church in Hollidaysburg. Mr. Snyder married, in 1908, Loretta Brown, a native of Philadelphia. She is a descendant of Colonel Cromwell Pearce, a native of Chester County, who achieved fame in the Revolutionary War, and she is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Snyders have one son, Harrison C. Snyder.
