HERBERT WALKER - Among Pennsylvania journalists, J. Herbert Walker is one of the better known outside of the field of his direct newspaper work. He is a lover of out-door life, and spends much time in the study of nature, and he well known to thousands for his weekly talks on nature over the radio, broadcasting from Station WFBG from Altoona. Mr. Walker was born in Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania, February 22, 1891, son of Milton A. Walker, born in Union County, Pennsylvania, engaged in various business enterprises, and is now associated with the Pennsylvania Railroad system. He married Henrietta Pardoe, born in Lewisburg, Union County, Pennsylvania, still living. His early education was in the public schools and the high school, from which he went to Bucknell University. Upon completing his education he entered the printing business, starting with the Lewisburg "Chronicle," with which he remained a year and a half. Then he went with the Lewisburg "Journal," remaining in that connection for five years. From that he was called to the Scranton "Republican," and here he remained for two years. Leaving that journal, he came to Altoona, and became associated with the Altoona "Tribune," in 1921, as a reporter, from which modest position he was advanced in 1923 to the position of editor-in-chief, which he now holds. During the Pinchot campaign Mr. Walker represented the Altoona "Tribune." Mr. Walker is a member of the Blair County Historical Society, the Altoona Chamber of Commerce, the Altoona Booster Association, the Blair County Fish, Game and Forestry Association, the Pennsylvania Folklore Society, the Pennsylvania Alpine Club, the Pennsylvania State Editorial Association, and the Associated Press of Pennsylvania. Mr. Walker served one enlistment term in the Pennsylvania National Guard, Company A, Twelfth Regiment, from 1912 to 1916. He has been a special correspondent for the Philadelphia "North American" and the Harrisburg "Telegraph." Mr. Walker is an attendant at the United Evangelical Church.
