US Army, World War I Fusco Mary 29 Sep 1907 Aged 36Y, America Woman Mary, Italy Donato Fusco DIRECTIONS TO CEMETERY: Take US-22 to Altoona. Take I-99/US-220 North for 5 miles. Exit at 17th Street (Exit 33). Turn right off exit onto 17th St. Follow 17th St. for 1 1/2 miles, and turn right onto 1st Avenue. Follow 1st Ave. for 10 blocks to the cemetery, located along 1st Ave. between 10th and 12th Streets. This Cemetery transcription/abstract was written by Ellis Michaels, using a digital photographic survey, performed by the author, over several visits to the cemetery during the months of Jul, Aug & Sep 2005. There were over 250 tombstone markers in the cemetery that were photographed digitally, but have deteriorated to the point of complete illegibility. There were also many indications of interments identifiable in the geographical landscape, but where no markers were apparent or identifiable as such. St John's cemetery adjoins the more German oriented St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. St. John's was previously enclosed (and identifiable) by an encircling iron fence. However, the lower portion of the fence that once marked and delineated the cemeteries dividing line has been removed. St. John's extends from the very top of the hill (along First Avenue), down along the iron fence and posts and partway into the hedgerows, to the last remaining iron post. The cemeteries dividing fence line occurs along a line connecting the last iron posts on both of the sides of the cemetery. It runs approximately 4 rows in front of the large Bowman and Greeley vaults in St. Mary's. A natural small dip occurs in the landscape along western portion of the old fence line. St John's Cemetery dates back to 1858, and is now managed by the Calvary Cemetery Association, Telephone: (814) 944-9656. The cemetery was previously surveyed and transcribed in 1982 by the Blair County Genealogical Society (BCGS), Hollidaysburg, PA. Blair County Genealogical Society (BCGS) website http://www.bcgslibrary.org/ The BGCS published transcription includes entries they obtained from reviewing the available cemetery records from the Calvary Cemetery Association, (apparently from about the year 1900 and on) of persons who were interred, but had no markers erected. As these interments had no tombstones erected, these persons were not revealed during this photographic survey. The BCGS publication also includes the section and lot numbers for each interment, and a rough map of the cemetery's layout.
