The following notes are taken from his Civil War Pension File # 291440, National Archives, Washington, DC. Application 6/11/1879. Disability: Spine & Chronic Diarrhea CIVIL WAR SERVICE: Private, Co. 'H', 13th Regiment PA Calvary commanded by Capt. John Kline. Enlisted February 26, 1864, Hollidaysburg, PA; honorably discharged August 7, 1865, Philadelphia, PA. Joshua fell from a horse injuring his spinal column on May 22,1864 at the front in Petersburg, VA. Starting In September 1864 at Malvern Hill, VA, he had chronic diarrhea. Co. 'H' muster rolls: "March/April/May/June 1864 he is reported present; July/August 1864 absent in hospital, City Point, VA; same report to Dec. 31, 1864; Jan./Feb. 1865 in hospital, Wilmington, NC; March/April 1865 in hospital; mustered out August 8, 1865." VOLUNTEER ENLISTMENT PAPERS from Joshua Kidd 2/23/1864 Age 43, born in Chester Co. PA, blacksmith. AFFIDAVIT from Joshua Kidd 6/18/1880 Five years proceeding his enlistment he lived in Duncansville, Blair Co., PA and after his return, resided there. In January 1870 he removed to Johnstown, Cambria Co., PA. He worked in blacksmithing in Duncansville after his return. Now he is engaged in 'helping' at the blacksmith shop in Cambria Iron Company because of his illnesses. He first noticed this disease in Bristow Station, VA "some time in the month of April 1864 and was treated for same in the hospital at City Pointe, VA and getting better he rejoined his Regiment and Company and went to Wilmington, NC and being again taken sick was again sent [back] to the hospital...transferred to a hospital in Rhode Island and from there to McClellan hospital of Philadelphia and from there to Morris General Hospital of Chestnut Hill in same city from which he was discharged in August 1865. He has but one very acute attack of the disease since his return...March 1869 and it continued until about the 1st of May 1869." He was attended by Dr. Smith of Hollidaysburg. Joshua found his home-made remedy gave him as much relief as what the doctors had given him...and he continues to have attacks regularly. AFFIDAVIT from John Walters He has known Joshua Kidd since 1866 and he knew him in Duncansville. He lived 'neighbor' with him. In February 1867 he suffered with chronic diarrhea and spine disease for X months he was not able to do any manual labor. He also lived close to him in Johnstown, Cambria Co., in the years 1875 and 1876 "and has seen him suffer with the above named diseases often to such an extent that he was compelled to leave off work for some time and this happened frequently during the time he lived in Johnstown. "Applicant further declares he worked in the same shop together and that Joshua Kidd often worked when he was not able to work." LETTER from George E. Lemon, Lawyer Stated Joshua died in drowning at Johnstown. Minor child surviving AFFIDAVITS from Charles Kinter & John Layton Charles worked with Joshua at the blacksmith shop in Cambria for 18 years. Suffers from diarrhea, etc. Sick 2-3 weeks at a time. John Layton worked with Joshua for 19 years - about 1870. He saw him daily except for the 2 years he was disabled. Joshua is sick about one month in twelve. AFFIDAVIT from William & Mary Leighty, Ebensburg, PA 5/26/1879 Joshua resided in Blair Co. & Johnstown.
