Kidd. Following are notes taken from Jacob A. Walter's Civil War Pension File #205276, Certificate #305436, National Archives, Washington, DC. Pensioned for scurvy, ulcer of left leg (caused by scurvy) as prisoner, Andersonville Prison, Andersonville, GA. Jacob Walters died November 11, 1925, Bellwood, PA Anna Valentine Walters died July 1, 1931. Last payment $40.00 6/4/1931 CIVIL WAR SERVICE: Bugler, Co. 'G', 12th Regiment of PA Cavalry Volunteers. Enlisted January 1, 1862, Duncansville, PA; enrolled January 8, 1862, Philadelphia, PA; mustered as a bugler February 17, 1862 - June 5, 1865, Philadelphia, PA; discharged June 6, 1865. STATEMENT from Jacob Walters 10/13/1884 "I, Jacob Walters, late Bugler, Co. 'G', 12th Reg't, PA Vol. Cavalry being duly sworn do depose and say as follows. I was present with my company and Regiment and in action in the time of my duty on the 29th day of June AD 1864 as near Charlestown, WVA - and in said action received a gun shot wound in the inside of my right knee and within a few minutes thereafter I was captured by the enemy and taken south and placed in Rebel prison where I remained for about eleven months; with me there were three comrades captured at the same time and place. Two of them, Christian Speece and John Brissell of Co. 'G' and Hartson Kipp of 'D' Co., the latter died in Rebel prison September 18, 1864. John Brissell is still living and his affidavit as to the fact in my case is herewith submitted. Of Christian Speece I have had no knowledge since he left the Rebel stockade at Anderson Ville -- in the fall of 1864. These were the only persons known to me who had personal knowledge of my injury. None of the officers of my company and Reg't had any personal knowledge of the facts, as none of them were captured so far as I know. I am therefore unable to furnish any other testimony in support of my claim. I was never treated for this injury by any medical officer of the US being a prisoner from the date of its incurrence till released by General Sherman -- in the spring of 1865 when the wound had so far healed up as to require no medical or surgical treatment." "I believe in my original declaration for pension I stated that I was wounded and captured 29th day of May 1864. This was an unintentional error...should have been June 29, 1864." STATEMENT from Jacob Walters 7/14/1885 "On the day of receiving the wound the detachment with which I was then serving was moving from Bolivar to Charlestown WVA and when we had passed Hall Town which is between the two places above named we met the enemy and engaged them and in this action I was wounded. We were then driven back again in the direction of Hall Town and near that place I was captured - and taken by the rebels back to Charlestown then two places Charlestown and Hall Town are as I now recollect, only a mile or a mile and a half apart, and I cannot say positively which of them I was nearer at that moment I was struck. I am very positive of this however, that I was only wounded and captured once - and that I was held as a prisoner till the close of the war and that I never rejoined my command after being wounded and captured as the aforesaid." AFFIDAVIT from Joseph A. Walters 9/15/1881 Joseph is age 44. Knew claimant previously and saw him immediately after discharge and was unable to perform manual labor for more than three years.
