Fifty Years Ago. The Blair county Prohibition party held its nominating session yesterday at Lakemont park. Those nominated are: Assembly, J. T. Baldrige of Hollidaysburg and J. J. Irvine of Altoona; register and recorder, C. E. Steele of Bellwood; county treasurer, S. C. Cowan of Tyrone, and district attorney, A. G. Pascoe of Altoona. Plans were completed for the annual Methodist day on July 28 at Lakemont park, with Rev. George Edward Reed, president of Dickinson college, Carlisle, scheduled as a speaker. East side residents of Altoona are petitioning the city councils for a policeman, mounted on a bicycle, to patrol the area and keep the speeding cyclists in check. Twenty-five Years Ago. Edgar Manning, aged 18, of 3013 Broad avenue and Robert Kessler, aged 16, of 203 Fifth avenue were drowned while swimming in the Raystown branch of the Juniata river. Rev. Father James C. Egan, pastor of St. Mark's Catholic church, announced the purchase of the five properties adjoining the church on the Sixth avenue side. The large bank barn at the Spruce Creek Rod and Gun club was destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at $10,000. Searching parties are endeavoring to find Mrs. Mary Burk of Duncansville, who has been missing since June 27. Ten Years Ago. The Puritan Knitting Mills company announced plans to acquire one of the Schwarzenbach-Huber buildings to provide additional space for its expanding business. John B. Elliott of Hollidaysburg was named vice president of the Pennsylvania Association of Prothonotaries at the group's meeting in Gettysburg. Miss Catherine Brannon, aged 86, of 1306 Fourteenth avenue was seriously injured in an accidental fall from a second-story window of her home. Leroy Myers, aged 18, of 605 East Sixth avenue was seriously burned in a powder explosion at the lower East side dump. Altoona Mirror, Thursday evening, July 22, 1948, page 8
