The silk workers are doing a handsome bit of war gardening on a fertile plot back of the Juniata mill and for some weeks past have been enjoying the eating of choice vegetables of their own producing. While the move was purely voluntary on the part of the employes it has drawn the recognition of the company and prizes were determined by judge selected from the force and General Supt. Robert Brupbacher on Saturday forwarded commensurate checks to Martin Aichelmann, Frank Beuna, Gottlieb Baer, John Deppen, Mike Noll and O. H. Aichelmann. The money came as a surprise and the recognition is highly appreciated. Altoona Tribune, Monday, August 26, 1918, page 2
