Nolder Does Heroic Service Rescuing Wounded Soldiers at Front Sergeant John N. Nolder, a former Altoonan with Pershing's army in France, has been sited for bravery and heroic work on the west front. He is a brother of Samuel S. Nolder, of 607 Seventh avenue, and spent several years in the city before he decided to enter the United States army. He is a veteran in the service, having served about twelve years in the army, serving both in Mexico and on the border. Sergeant Nolder is credited with performing a heroic act in the rescue of wounded comrades while serving with a hospital unit on the west front. For his bravery he has been cited for honors and is likely to receive, in addition to the medals awarded by France, the medal of honor of his own country. He is the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Nolder who resides at Petersburg where the soldier was reared. Previous to entering the service he came to this city and was employed in the Altoona shops. Then he enlisted and saw service in China and the Philippines. His enlistment expired in 1916 and when the Mexican trouble broke he re-enlisted and went to the border and from there accompanied the Pershing force to France.
