Metzgar, Police Surgeon, Departs for Service at Camp Greenleaf Dr. Carl H. Metzgar, of 1424 Twelfth avenue, and city police surgeon, departed at an early hour this morning for Camp Greenleaf, Georgia, to enter the service of the United States in the medical corps. He speared on the street last evening for the first time in his uniform and made a soldierly appearance. He left the city with the best wished of many friends and hoping that his stay on this side of the Atlantic would be of short duration. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Adams, of 76 Washington avenue, received word yesterday that their son, Morgan J. Adams, has arrived overseas. He is a member of the headquarters company of a battery of field artillery. Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Flickinger, of 3038 Broad avenue, have received a card of the safe arrival overseas of their son, Sergeant Charles W. Flickinger. He is a member of the 281st Aero squadron and trained at Parkfield, Tenn. Jacob Elpern, of Greensburg, and formerly of Altoona, is resting in a base hospital in France as the result of an explosion of a big shell, which, going off in his neighborhood, buried him under eighteen feet of earth. He suffered contusions of the leg, but was otherwise unscathed. Lawrence Hite, aged 22, son of Mr. S. A. Hite, of 2510 Seventh avenue, is in France as a corporal with the 446th Engineers, enlisting November 20, 1917. He has been in France since January 17, 1918, and says that France is a beautiful country but where he is located the terrain is all pocked with shell holes. His brother, Park S. Hite, is a senior master engineer in Washington. Daniel I. Stultz, son of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Stultz, of Williamsburg, is over in France with Company C, 601st Engineers. He enlisted in February, training at Camp Lee, Virginia, and Camp Glen Burnie, Maryland. He has been in France since early in July. Edgar D. Lafferty, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Lafferty, of 1903 Fifteenth avenue, is serving with the regimental band in Company B, 315th Infantry, machine gun unit. He was the formerly employed at Johnstown in the Cambria Steel company plant.
