Dr. and Mrs. James B. Stein yesterday received two letters from their son James, jr., who is now in an American hospital recovering from a dose of shrapnel. The young man is in Company F, First regiment, First division, Engineers, and was on duty in the great drive. On July 18, while he was engaged with others in enlarging a shell hole to shelter the men, one of the 150 millimeter shells fell about five feet from them. As it burst pieces of shrapnel caught young Stein in the right shoulder, right and left hands. His escape from death was narrow and his friends are rejoicing in the fact that he is now doing nicely. He has the same spirit as all the other American boys have shown - a strong desire to be back at the work and to give the Germans what's coming to them.
