AFRICA Altoona Mirror Dec 9. 1988 Mr. Africa, 88, a guest of Valley View Home, formerly of 1303 7th St., died at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, 1988, at Altoona Hospital. Mr. Africa retired from the Juniata Shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1966, after 40 years' service. He was also doorman at the Frohsinn Singing Society for ten years. He was born May 15, 1900, in Altoona, the son of Millard and Elia (Mintor) Africa, and in 1925, married Rohena M. Sharer, who died Sept. 6, 1985. Surviving are two children: Leno J. of Freemont, Calif., and Shirley M. Griffith of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Africa, of 421 First Ave, died at 7:30 o'clock last night at the family residence, death being attributed to heart trouble after three days illness. She was a native of McVeytown and was born October 13, 1860 the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Sunderland. Her Husband W. L. Africa died Jan 23, 1926. Surviving are a son L. R. Africa, one daughter, Mrs. Anna Hoffman of Monongahela; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist Church. Interment will be made in Rose Hill cemetery. ________ Mrs. Ellen Rebecca AFRICA Claar Obits Book for 1935 January 27, 1935 Mrs. Ellen Rebecca Africa Aged 64, of 1623 Eleventh avenue, died at 7 o'clock yesterday morning at Mercy Hospital of diabetes. She was born in McVeytown on May 2, 1870, but had resided in Altoona for many years. Her husband, Millard Africa, died on April 23, 1931. Surviving are three sons, Arthur, Robert, and Harry, all of this city; seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one sister, Mrs. Warrick of Harrisburg. Mrs. Africa was a member of the First Methodist church. Funeral services will be held at the home of a son, Arthur Africa, 2009 Tenth street, at 2.30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Interment will be made in Fairview cemetery. ________ Mrs. Elsie C. (BRANTNER) AFRICA [d. October 27, 1918] Mrs. Elsie C. Africa, wife of Lawrence Africa, died at the family home at 230 Seventh Avenue, yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock of pneumonia. She was born on December 12, 1884 and is survived by her husband and the following children: Marguerite, Elizabeth, Helen, William, Leroy, and Lawrence. Surviving also are these brothers and sisters: John, William, Charles, and Porter Brantner of Williamsburg, Mrs. Emma Edwards of this city. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Private funeral services will be held at the home on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Private interment in Rose Hill Cemetery. ________ Harry M. AFRICA [d. November 7, 1936] Of 2105 1/2 Seventh Avenue, died at 10.15 o'clock Saturday night at the Mercy hospital. He was born in the city on March 25, 1885, a son of Millard and Ida (Doughman) Africa, both deceased. Surviving are his wife, Mazie (Wilson) Africa; three daughters and two sons, Mrs. Curtis Costlow, Harry W., Arlene, Anna Jean and William all at home; one grandchild, his brother, Robert Africa and one step-brother, Arthur Africa. ________ Lawrence E. AFRICA Altoona Mirror September 25, 1936 Lawrence E. AFRICA, who resided at the home of a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Weston of 929 Second avenue, died suddenly at 2:15 o'clock yesterday afternoon of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was born in the city on May 31, 1882, a son of Warren and Elizabeth Africa, and was formerly employed as a brakeman on the Middle division. His wife Elsie (Brantner) Africa, died in 1918. Surviving are three sons and three daughters, Mrs. Weston, Mrs. C. W. Eaton, and Leroy Africa of Bowie MD, William of Washington, DC, Mrs. Richard Walker of the city, and Paul Africa of Philadelphia. Twelve grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. L. F. Hoffman of Monongehela City also survive. Mr. Africa was of the Lutheran Faith. Funeral services for Lawrence E. Africa of 929 Second Avenue were held at the Stevens Memorial chapel this afternoon. Interment was made at Rose Hill cemetery. ________ Millard Filmore AFRICA Altoona Tribune April 24, 1931 Page 12 Millard Filmore Africa, who was employed almost 54 years by the Pennsylvania Railroad company, died at his home, 1902 Union Ave, yesterday, 2:16 A.M.; after an illness of only a week. Mr. Africa was the son of Robert W. and Jennie Weaver Africa, born in Huntingdon, July 1, 1856. He entered PRR service in the Huntingdon shops as a laborer when a lad of 16 and came to Altoona in 1878 with only a few weeks elapsing between his Huntingdon and Altoona service. He was a car builder in the Fourth street shops for 28 years, a watchman nine years and later an electrician, retiring August 1, 1926. He was a member of the First Episcopal Church. His first wife Ida Doughman Africa, died in 1892. Surviving are his second wife Mrs. Ella Minder Africa and three sons: Robert W., Harry M., And Arthur E. Africa; seven grandchildren, a brother and a sister: Howard Africa, Wilkinsburg; Mrs. C. B. Miller, Cleveland, O. Funeral services will be held at Stevens Memorial chapel Sunday, 2:30 P.M. the Rev. J. McK. Reiley, D. D. officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. The body may be viewed till noon Sunday. ________ Robert Wesley AFRICA Huntingdon Journal August 18, 1893 R. Wesley Africa Dead On Saturday afternoon last R. Wesley Africa, a well known and highly respected citizen of this place, died from the effects of cancer of the stomach, aged 59 years, 9 months and 19 days. Deceased had been a resident of this town all his life and for a number of years was employed as carpenter by the H. & B. T. R. R. company. Later years he was assistant foremen in the Penn's company's repair shops in this place, but five years ago he received internal injuries which practically disabled him. During that time he tried every means to restore health, but the most carefully planned devices failed, and as a last resort he went to a Philadelphia hospital, but even there the talent was not sufficient to restore Mr. Africa to health, and death came to his relief at the time mentioned above. He was a good citizen, and his death is greatly mourned. He is survived by an invalid wife and four children, Millard and Warren, of Altoona, and Howard and Eunice of this place, to whom the JOURNAL extends its heartfelt sympathy. Funeral occurred on Monday morning. Interment in Riverview Cemetery. ________ Warren S. AFRICA Altoona Tribune Monday, January 25, 1926 Warren S. Africa, of 429 First Avenue, died at 6:15 o'clock Saturday evening of pneumonia. Deceased was born in Huntingdon County, October 24, 1859. He was a retired PRR company freight conductor, a member of the Lutheran church, Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen, Retired Railroad Men's Club, and the PRR Relief. Surviving are his wife and two children, Lawrence E of this city and Mrs. Annie Hoffman, of Monongahela city. Two brothers, Millard, of this city; Howard, of Wilkinsburg; one sister, Mrs. D. C. Miller, of Cleveland, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. ________ William A. AFRICA Altoona Mirror May 9, 1939 Former resident of this city, died last week at Glenndale, MD, and was interred on Thursday at Fort Lincoln cemetery, Washington, DC. Mr. Africa was born on July 14, 1913, in this city, a son of Lawrence and Elsie (Brantner) Africa. Surviving are one brother, Leroy Africa of Gambrills, MD, and three sisters, Mrs. C. W. Eaton of Gambrills Mills, MD, Mrs. E. F. Weston, and Mrs. Helen A. Walker, both of this city. ________ William W. AFRICA Altoona Mirror William W. Africa, 78, 4116 Beale Ave., died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Van Zandt VA Medical Center. He was born April 29, 1920, in Altoona, the son of Harry and Mazie (Wilson) Africa. He married Pearl Pipetti in December 1941 in Altoona. She died Jan. 15, 1985. Mr. Africa was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, East Freedom. He retired as a machinist from Conrail in May 1981, after 40 years of service. Mr. Africa was a 1939 graduate of Altoona High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict, serving as a sergeant in the Air Corps. Surviving are a daughter, Bonnie Lou Haines of Duncansville; a son, William Jr. of Everett; and a granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Santella Funeral Home. AFRICA - Funeral services for William W. Africa of 4116 Beale Ave. will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Santella Funeral Home by Pastor Andrew Fitch. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Santella Funeral Home. Also survived by a granddaughter, Margaret Haines. Preceded in death by three sisters: Zella Costlow, Anna Jean Probst, and Arlene Swisher; and a brother, Harry.
