Anderson, a pioneer Altoona business man and a promoter and incorporator of a number of public service corporations and public institutions of the city, died at 2.15 o'clock yesterday morning at the Mt. Hope hospital, Baltimore, where he had been ill for some time. Death was due to diseases incident to old age. Mr. Anderson, who was aged 81, was prominent in the mercantile business in Blair county in the early days, and later, on coming to Altoona thirty-five years ago, became interested in a great number of branches of business, as well as being a promoter of a number of projects for civic betterment. He was born at Newry, Blair county, February 28, 1836. As a young man, he engaged in the mercantile business in East Freedom and then went to Martinsburg, where he conducted a general store for some time. He came to Altoona thirty-five years ago and entered the clothing business where the Westfall Co. store is now located. He was one of the original promoters of the Edison Electric Illuminating company when it started in 1887, and was also one of the men who established the Mountain City Electric Light company. In his affiliation with the Edison company he was head of the corporation for many years. He was a director in the Second National bank and of the Fidelity and several other Building and Loan associations. In 1882 he was one of the organizers of the City Passenger Railway company and was later interested in the Union Furnace Manufacturing company, located at that place and was for years actively engaged in the real estate business in this city. Mr. Anderson served two terms in select council and was president of the select body during 1889. He was one of the incorporators of the Altoona hospital and was one of the early members of the Altoona Mechanics' library. He was preceded to the grave by his wife, who died eight years ago, and is survived by two daughters and one son, Mrs. C. E. Wolf, Miss Magdalen C., at home, and C. F. Anderson, of this city. One sister, Mrs. J. E. Carroll, of Buffalo, N.Y., also survives. He was a faithful and consistent member of St. John's Catholic church, where the funeral will be held with requiem high mass will [sic] be celebrated at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning followed by burial in St. John's cemetery.
