Askew, One of the most widely known and popular residents of Altoona, died at his home, No. 1224 Seventeenth avenue, at noon today of consumption, after a lingering illness. Mr. Askew had been in ill health for the past two years, but it was only within the last year that his sickness was regarded as being serious, but the last two weeks he had been confined to his bed, growing weaker day by day, until death ensued and relieved him of his sufferings. Deceased was born in Carlisle, Cumberland county, Pa., on November 6, 1845, and was aged fifty years, one month and three days. He came to this city twenty five years ago and shortly afterwards entered the employ of H. J. Cornman, with whom he remained many years. He then engaged in business at Eleventh avenue and Eleventh street for himself. On March 13 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Letitia A. Smith, who survives, as does also one son, Charles. Five brothers also survive: William of Philadelphia, Jacob, John, Joseph and Albert of this city. One sister, Mrs. Mary Keesey of Minnesota, also survives. Deceased was a member of the Second Presbyterian church and one of the first members of Logan lodge, No. 39, Knights of Pythias. Mr. Askew was well liked by all who knew him. He possessed many excellent traits of character and was generous to a fault. His bereaved wife has the sympathy of the community in her affection.
