Under engine No. 434, of which he was fireman, Irvin Attleman met his death shortly before 6 o'clock yesterday morning. Mr. Attleman has for many years been a faithful employe of the railroad company in the capacity of fireman, and also engineer. On Monday night there was some trouble with the grate bars of No. 434, but not such as would cause the locomotive to be stopped. The defect was mentioned to Mr. Attleman by the retiring fireman, Harry Mitchell, and both men went under the engine to discover the trouble. This locomotive at the hour of 6 o'clock in the morning has its position near the west side of the Ninth street bridge. Both men were under it looking after the defect, when a draft of six cars was shunted in. Mitchell was lucky in getting off with a few bruises. Mr. Attleman was not so fortunate. Being an older man, he had no opportunity to escape, and the impetus of the draft of cars sent the engine back over him. He was caught by the driving wheels and his life was crushed out of him. As soon as the mangled remains could be taken from underneath the cruel wheels the body was given into the charge of Undertaker Lafferty. After an investigation into the death by Deputy Coroner McCartney, it was decided that no inquest was necessary. The deceased was an old railroader, having been in the employ of the company for thirteen years as a fireman and engineer. At the time of his death he was employed as a fireman. His residence is 2218 Seventh avenue. In age he was about 51 years and beside his sorrowing wife he leaves three children - one son and two daughters. In religious faith he was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic church. In addition he belonged to the Pennsylvania Railroad Voluntary Relief Fun and to the Yard Employes' association. The funeral will take place on Thursday morning at 9 o'clock at which hour mass will be said over the remains in St. Mary's church. The interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery.
