"Jack" Ayres, M.D., age 85, of 1659 Madison Avenue, Tyrone, passed away September 13, 2006. Friends may call at the Feller Memorial Home, 817 W. 15th St., Tyrone, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2006. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Officiant will be Reverend Mark Liller, Chaplain at Epworth Manor. Interment at Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon. The family has requested that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions in remembrance of Dr. Ayres be sent to Tyrone Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive, Tyrone, Pa. 16686 or Epworth Manor, 951 Washington Avenue, Tyrone, Pa. 16686. "Jack" Ayres M.D., 85, of 1659 Madison Ave., Tyrone, died at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, at Epworth Manor, Tyrone. Born Oct. 13, 1920, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late William H. and Mae Virginia (Stiver) Ayres. He was united in marriage to the former Janet Ruth Pelan in the Abbey Reformed Church, Huntingdon, by the Rev. Dr. Hobart D. McKeehan. Mrs. Ayres survives at their residence. Dr. Ayres is also survived by two daughters and two sons, Judith (Ayres) Daly, Ph.D., and husband, John, the Netherlands; Christine (Ayres) Po-Chedley, MEd, MS, and husband, Donald, Hamburg, N.Y.; John A. Ayres Jr., Esq. and wife, Marie (Celmo), Clearfield; and William S. Ayres and wife, Mary Beth, Imperial, and currently residing in South Korea; and six grandchildren, Benjamin and Ernesto Ayres, Buffalo, N.Y.; Jessica and Nathan Ayres, Philadelphia; Stephen Po-Chedley, Schenectady, N.Y.; and Evan Po-Chedley, Hamburg, N.Y.; and a great- granddaughter. He is also survived by two nieces, Betsy Marx, Sarasota, Fla.; and Jean Wyre, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth (Ayres) Donelson and Ruth Rebecca Ayres. Dr. Ayres was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, United Methodist Church, Tyrone. He served with the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II in the American Theatre of Operations at Wadsworth Veterans Hospital, Levenworth, Kan. He retired from active and reserve duty with the Medical Corps with the rank of captain. He was a member of the Tyrone Lodge No. 494, F&AM; the American Medical Association and the Pennsylvania Medical Society. He was a former member of the Sinking Valley Country Club and served on the Tyrone Area School Authority. Dr. Ayres attended Huntingdon public schools and graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1938 and from Juniata College in 1942, during which time he played on the tennis team. He was a 1945 graduate of Jefferson Medical School, after which he served his internship at Germantown Hospital, Germantown. A self-employed physician in family practice in Tyrone, Dr. Ayres retired in 1986. He was the last surviving member of the original physicians staff at Tyrone Hospital and had admitted the first patient to the Tyrone Hospital in 1954. He served as chief of staff at Tyrone Hospital from 1979 until the early 1980s. Dr. Ayres enjoyed golf, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren. Service plans are incomplete at this time and will be announced at a later date. Interment will be made in the Riverview Cemetery, 245 Standing Stone Ave., Huntingdon. At the family's request, no public viewing or visitation will be held. The family asks that flowers be omitted and memorial contributions in remembrance of Dr. Ayres be made to the Tyrone Hospital, 1 Hospital Drive, Tyrone, PA 16686; Epworth Manor, 951 Washington Ave., Tyrone, PA 16686; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
