Butler, 83, of East Freedom, went home to be with the Lord Friday at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in East Freedom, the son of the late Harry Leo and Ella Mae (Kauffman) Butler. He married Vernadine “Boots” (Strayer) Butler on Nov. 11, 1960. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Sandra Devers and husband, Ron, of Roaring Spring; a grandson, Aaron Devers and fiancee, Andreia, of Roaring Spring; a sister, Annie Walk; two brothers, Russell Butler and Dean Butler and wife, Janet; and two sisters-in-law, Ginny Musselman and Shirley Musselman. John was preceded in death by a son, Donald, who died in 2013; five sisters: Edith Corle, Ruth Barnes, Effie Shriver, Edna Snyder and Ida Ayers; and a brother, Harry Butler. John was a member of Smith Corner Church, where he belonged to the Adult Sunday School Class. He retired from Appleton Papers in 2001 after 34 years of service, where he had worked in the wood yard. John enjoyed tinkering in his “he-shed,” going on day trips, reading and studying his Bible, building and repairing his whirligig spinners, making apple butter, and he loved having family picnics. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at Smith Corner Church and from 10 to the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the church, with Pastor David McClanahan and Pastor Rodney Ingram officiating. Interment will be made at Holsinger Cemetery. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Gentiva Hospice for their outstanding service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be given to the Smith Corner Church — Ladies Aide. Arrangements are by Todd T. Thompson Funeral Home Inc.
