After a brief and painful illness of two weeks, Mr. Simon Baird, an old and highly respected citizen of this community, died at his home on Walnut street yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. He had lingered between life and death for several days and the announcement that he was dead was not a surprise. A manufacturer of carriages and wagons, Mr. Baird was perhaps one of the best and most widely known citizens in this community. His residence in our midst dates from 1858, and was always esteemed an upright and worthy citizen. He was the father of a large family of grown up sons and daughters. He was kind and benevolent in his disposition and a Christian gentleman. From early manhood he was a member of the Lutheran church and up to the time of his illness was a worker in the Sunday school, in which he took an interest and found pleasure. He was industrious and attentive to his business, and made it a rule of his life to deal fairly and squarely with his fellow man. Hence he was respected by all with whom he had business intercourse. Mr. Baird was born on the 19th day of January, 1817, near Hagerstown, in the county of Washington, and had just completed his 74th year the day prior to his death. From Maryland he came to Woodbury, in Bedford county, where for two years he was engaged in mercantile pursuits. In the year 1858 he came to Hollidaysburg and establishing himself in the carriage making business, which was his trade, and continued ever since to conduct successfully that business. He was twice married. His first marriage having been with Miss Mary Shank, of Hagerstown, Md., December 19, 1840. The fruits of this union were six children, all of whom survive him except one daughter, Mrs. George McCahan, late of Altoona, whose death occurred about nine years ago. The sons are Daniel, of Altoona, and John, of this place. The daughters are Susan, wife of William Carpenter, of Canton, Ohio; Amanda, wife of A. R. Ross, of Columbia, Pa., and Jennie, wife of George Barr, of Gaysport. Mr. Baird was deprived of the companionship of his first wife, who died in April, 1865. He was again married to the devoted and faithful wife who survives him, Miss Anna Sharrar, on the 23d day of June, 1869. The union was a happy one and the few years of their wedded life were pleasantly spent. The funeral services will be held at the late residence of the deceased this evening at 8 o'clock. The funeral cortege will leave the house for Woodbury, the place of interment, on Thursday morning at 7.30 o'clock. On arriving at Woodbury, services will be held in the church at that place, after which the old-time friends of that community will have an opportunity to view the remains.
