BAKER At Roaring Spring yesterday there was laid to rest the body of Andrew C. Baker, one of the best known citizens of his town. Notice of his death appeared in Monday morning's city edition, but, unfortunately, not in the edition that reached the Cove. Mr. Baker died on Saturday morning after a three months' illness of cancer of the stomach. He was born in Midvale, Woodbury township, October 23, 1842, and was a son of David and Esther Baker, deceased. December 1, 1867, he was united in marriage with Miss Susanna P. Zook, of Bloomfield township, who preceded him to the grave October 31, 1915. Mr. Baker was a veteran of the Civil war, serving for three years in the Thirteenth Pennsylvania cavalry, Company C. While fighting for the cause of freedom, he received injuries that made him a cripple for life, but in spite of this affliction he was a successful farmer, both in Bedford and Blair counties, living in the latter until fifteen years ago, when ill-health compelled him to give up such strenuous work, after which time he and his family came to Roaring Spring, and have ever since been numbered among its most respected citizens. Although the last few months of the deceased's life were entirely filled with pain, he endured it patiently and uncomplainingly, appreciating the loving care given him by his children, especially so, the untiring devotion of Miss Nettie, the daughter at home. Andrew C. Baker was a member of the Church of God, for many years and when health permitted was a regular attendant at all means of worship, he was also a member of Lieut. H. M. Lower post, No. 82, G.A.R., held at Roaring Spring. Mr. Baker is survived by seven children, viz., Miss Nettie, at home; Mrs. F. S. Himes, Mrs. John Yingling, Mrs. Robert Garber, Bertrum and Elias, all of Roaring Spring; Charles of Duncansville, and George of Woodbury; also surviving are four brothers and one sister, John C., of Lakemont; Joseph, of Altoona; David, of Hershey; Levi, of Roaring Spring, and Mrs. A. L. Glass, of Martinsburg. Altoona Tribune, Wednesday, May 29, 1918, page 1
