At 8.55 o'clock Monday night Mrs. Hetty R. Baker, one of the earliest residents of this vicinity, and almost the oldest in the county, died at her home, the old Baker homestead, at Allegheny Furnace, of diseases incident to old age. She had been in failing health for several years. Deceased was the widow of Elias Baker, who built the furnaces at Allegheny, just south of the city, and was born in Lancaster, Pa., October 2, 1803. With her husband she came to Blair county (then Huntingdon) in 1830 and settled at Allegheny Furnace. The ground on which Altoona is now located was then farming land. Her husband preceded her to the grave in 1864, and since then Mrs. Baker resided at the old homestead. She was a devout Christian lady, a member of the Second Presbyterian church and highly esteemed by a host of friends. She is survived by two children, Dr. S. C. Baker and Miss Anna Baker, both at home, and by one grand-child, Miss Louise W. Beckman, now in Sweden. The funeral services, which will be public, will be conducted at the house at 2.30 o'clock Thursday afternoon by Rev. J. L. Russell, formerly pastor of the Second Presbyterian church but now of Darby, near Philadelphia. The interment will be private and will be made in Fairview cemetery.
