George Beales, engineer on Engine 475, was killed and his front brakeman very seriously injured on Wednesday evening last at Portage Station while approaching the water tank at that point. Both men were residents of this city. Mr. Beales, with whom we were personally acquainted, was a young man of sterling qualities in the walks of life, and his loss will be deeply felt and regretted by his family, and a host of sympathizing friends. Mr. Beales leaves a wife and one child. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and there will be one consolation in the sad bereavement, and that is that his family will be taken care of. Patrick Garvey was the name of the brakeman on the train with Mr. Beales, also belongs to this city, where he is well known and much respected. As told us Mr. Beale's train was going west, while engine No. 218, Harry Cook engineer, was standing at the water tank at the above station, which fact it seems Beales failed to observe, until too late. Mr. Cook was off his engine but seeing the approaching train, jumped to his post and pulled the lever to move his train, but before it had got under headway the collision took place.
