All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ INJURIES PROVE FATAL TO CHILD IN AUTO MISHAP Janet Marie Beck, 6-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Beck of 1300 Pleasant Valley avenue, was a fatally injured near her home at 5.15 o'clock last evening when she was struck by an automobile operated by Mrs. W. B. Bennett, aged 47, of 1817 Sixteenth street. The child died at the Mercy hospital at 7.45 o'clock last evening. She suffered a fractured skull, broken left hip, body bruises and brain hemorrhages. Coroner Chester C. Rothrock and city police investigated the fatality. The coroner said today that he would conduct an inquest into the youngster's death. The child went to a store at 1329 Pleasant Valley avenue, owned by Mrs. Rosa Hipp, to purchase tobacco for her father. Upon leaving the store, she stepped from behind a parked automobile into the path of Mrs. Bennett's car. The driver told authorities that she attempted to swerve her car to the left but that "it was too late to avoid striking the child." The right front wheel of the machine hit the child. The victim was rendered unconscious and remained in a coma until her death. James Murry and William Merrell, both of Sandy Ridge, were standing along the highway and witnessed the accident, police said. Janet Marie Beck was born on Nov. 19, 1933, in Altoona and is survived by her parents, Joseph and Louisa (Kroll) Beck and these brothers and sisters: John and George of Altoona and William at home, Mrs. Helen Burns of Altoona and Mrs. Ethel Pielmeler of Chicago, and her maternal grandfather, Adam Kroll. Her father is a car builder in the P. R. R. Twelfth street shops. She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic church. Friends will be received at the home after 6 o'clock this evening. Hand-dated 7/24 BECK - The funeral of Janet Marie Beck of 1300 Pleasant Valley boulevard will be held Saturday morning with requiem mass at 9 o'clock in St. Mary's church.
