Henry Beckman, an aged and respected citizen of the First ward and a former sanitary officer of the city health bureau, died at his home, 1012 Sixteenth avenue, at 12:45 o'clock yesterday afternoon of diseases incident to old age after an illness extending over the period of a year. Deceased was born on March 23, 1838, and had resided in the country for some seventy years. He had resided in Altoona forty years and for a number of years he conducted a shoemaking shop at Chestnut avenue and Eleventh street on the site of the present federal building. He served for fifteen years as sanitary officer, retiring from that position in 1915. Surviving are his wife nee Sotia Fegler and five children, Mrs. T. O'Brien, of this city; Henry G. in the army at Sandy Hook Improvement grounds at Aberdeen, Md.; Sister Remiga, located in Elk county, and Joseph and Frank, at home. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church. The body will be taken to Latrobe for burial, the funeral to be held Thursday morning. Altoona Tribune, Tuesday morning, August 27, 1918, page 2
