All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ ANTHONY BENDER One of the city's best known residents, in the person of Mr. Anthony Bender, died at his home, 1324 Third Avenue, Saturday morning at 7:55 o'clock, death being caused by cancer of the stomach combined with tuberculosis. He had been ill during the last six months. Mr. Bender was born in the town of Hohenzollern, Germany, on April 11, 1850, and came to this country in 1863, when a boy of 13 years, and settled in Hollidaysburg, where he learned the trade of a tinner. When he was 18 years old he moved to this city, where he has since resided. He secured employment from the railroad company and had worked for them thirty- seven years, being employed at the Twelfth Street tin shop at the time he became ill. On November 14, 1870, he was united in marriage to Catherine Harmon who survives him, as do also the following children: William H., John A., Oscar E., Louis H., Charles P., all of Altoona; Mrs. Emma Clymer, of Huntingdon; Joseph and Mary, at home. Mr. Bender during his lifetime took an active part in politics and was a well known politician in the local Democratic Party. In 1882 he served as jury commissioner. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the railroad relief. The funeral cortege will leave his late home at 8:45 o'clock Tuesday morning. Requiem mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church and interment will be made in St. Mary's Cemetery. Morning Tribune, Saturday, July 21, 1906
