Berkhimer, Aged 49, of Roaring Spring Is Struck by Car While Walking on Highway. Harry H. Berkhimer, aged 49, of 600 Locust street, Roaring Spring, was fatally injured at 10.45 o'clock Saturday night when he was hit by an automobile driven by Earnest Slater of Roaring Spring, R.D. Berkhimer, known to his friends as Jim, suffered a fractured skull and fractures of the right leg and succumbed as he was being admitted to the Nason hospital, Roaring Spring. The fatality took place at Rodman, one mile north of Roaring Spring. Berkhimer, in company with his brother, Albert, was en route to Roaring Spring when their automobile struck the rear of a truck operated by Clarence Feathers of New Enterprise, which machine was parked along the highway. Berkhimer alighted from his car and was in the act of going to a nearby gas station to telephone the state motor police about his accident when the machine operated by Slater struck him. In statements to Coroner Chester C. Rothrock and Corporal E. J. Fox and Private J. Y. Mermelstein of the state motor police, Slater said he did not see Berkhimer until the man was directly in front of him. Slater's wife was a passenger in the car and also witnessed the accident. Harry H. Berkhimer was born in Roaring Spring on July 24, 1888, a son of Charles and Sara (Hainley) Berkhimer. He was married on Nov. 18, 1920, to Kathryn Frye of Roaring Spring, the ceremony taking place in the United Brethren parsonage in Tyrone. Surviving are the widow and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Adaline Dodson of East Freedom, Mrs. Jennie Spencer, Mrs. Mae Noffsker and Mrs. Pearl Deeter, all of Roaring Spring, Mrs. Frank Adams of Plum Creek, William Berkhimer of Altoona, Wesley of Johnstown, Charles of Roaring Spring and Albert of Plum Creek. Mr. Berkhimer was employed as a laborer by the Roaring Spring school district. He received his education in the school at Rodman. He was a member of the Bare Memorial Church of God, Roaring Spring.
