Books, one of Altoona's most prominent physicians, died early yesterday morning at Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he had gone a week ago in the hope of benefiting his health. Death was caused by heart disease. Dr. Brooks [sic] during the summer suffered from asthma and spent five weeks at Ann Arbor, Mich., the guest of the dean of the University of Michigan and he returned to Altoona late in July only to have a return of his previous ailment. He was one of the best known physicians in Altoona and Blair county and was prominent throughout the state. He was the organizer of the Blair county Homeopathic society and president for several years. He was identified with the Interstate Medical society. He was former president of the Western Pennsylvania Auxiliary Alumna association of the Hahnemann college and prominent in the American Interstate [missing word] of Homeopathy. During 1915 he was president of the Pennsylvania Homeopathic society. Benjamin Franklin Books was born on May 14, 1859, at Mifflintown, Juniata county, the son of Solomon, deceased, and Nancy Books. He was educated in the schools of Juniata county and in 1879 began the study of medicine under Dr. D. C. Smith. In the fall of 1881 college at Cleveland, O. Two years later he entered the Hahnemann Medical college, Philadelphia, and graduated in 1883. He located at Lewistown where he continued the practice of medicine for five years. His health broke down and he went to Colorado where he remained for three months. Dr. Books came to Altoona in 1889 opening an office at 1116 Twelfth avenue. Later he moved to the Altoona Trust building. In 1892 he organized the Blair Homeopathic society. He was united in marriage to Miss Cora McDade of Gallitzin in 1901 and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Nancy Books of 610 Sixth avenue, this city, his widow, and one brother, W. B. Books of Altoona, and two sisters, Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Essix, both of Philadelphia. Dr. Books was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and prominent in the lodge. The remains will be sent to Altoona and will be received later in the week by Funeral Director E. W. Jones. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Tuesday Morning, December 24, 1918
