John Bowers died at his home in North Woodbury township, about one mile southeast of this village, at 5 o'clock Wednesday evening from cancer of the stomach. The deceased was born near Marklesburg, Huntingdon county, about the year 1807 and came to the Cove very early in life, and by industry and economy soon took his place at the head of the enterprising farmers and laid by in store a competency that placed him among our best of farmers. Early in life he united with the River Brethren church, to which he was a devoted member during all his years, so that when the summons came he was ready to pass up higher. Mr. Bowers was a stout, robust man and being careful of his health, he passed along comparatively free from the ills that beset the way until during the past winter, when by contracting a heavy cold he became prostrated and seriously ill for several weeks, but by attentive nursing he rallied and his familiar face and form was frequently on our streets during the passing summer. In the years that are gone Mr. Bowers united his fortunes with a Miss Huffman, who shared his lot faithfully and well, and who, together with a creditable family of children, survive him.
