John Boyland, of No. 615 Third avenue, a brakeman on the Pittsburgh division, who was injured by his train breaking, near Greensburg at noon last Friday and who was subsequently brought to the Altoona hospital for treatment, died at that institution at half-past 7 o'clock Friday evening. The deceased was born in Hollidaysburg in 1857, and was a son of Joseph and Alice Boyland, now of Cresson. He has lived in this city about four years and on the 21st of April, 1887, he was married to Miss Lizzie Benson, who survives. He is also survived by four brothers and three sisters who are: Maurice, James, Joseph and Charles Boland, and Mary, Alice and Ellie, all of whom reside at Cresson with their parents. Coroner Glenn having been notified proceeded to the hospital where he empanneled [sic] the following jury: R. G. Smith, G. F. Fresh, Frank V. Huss, William Bennett, James B. Major and E. M. Jones. After viewing the remains they adjourned. Altoona Tribune, March 7, 1889 A Verdict Rendered. With regard to the causes leading to the death of John Boyland, the brakeman who was crushed between cars when near Greensburg some days ago, the coroner's jury yesterday met and took testimony, afterward rendering the following verdict: "That death was caused by cystitis, or inflammation of the bladder, together with inflammation of the peritoneum and part of the omentum, said injuries caused while in the discharge . . . .
