Brady, aged 79, of 505 Sixth avenue, this city, a retired Juniata shopman, and Jacob Bottle, aged 60, an Austrian laborer residing at Pemberton, met death on the Middle division of the Pennsy yesterday morning shortly after 9 o'clock, while attempting to cross tracks ahead of approaching trains. John I. Brady was struck and instantly killed at 9.30 o'clock, at Rye, when he stepped in the way of passenger extra 1593, hauling Battery "A" First Penna. Artillery on its way east from El Paso, Texas. He went to Ryde on No. 600 at 9.15 o'clock, to purchase country produce. It was his intention to return on No. 41, due here at 10.30 o'clock. In crossing over the tracks at the station, Mr. Brady failed to note the trains approach. Engineer F. J. Schull whistled an alarm. The aged man crouched against the track fence until the passenger train was less than thirty feet distant when he attempted to leap across track No. 1. He was caught by the engine, which hurled his body to the side of the tracks. Taken to Lewistown Junction on train 664 his body was prepared for burial there, later being brought to this city and taken in charge by Funeral Director Stevens. A purse containing nearly $400 was found in the victim's clothing. John I. Brady was born in Adams county, October 13, 1837. He came to Altoona at an early age, entering the service of the company in 1860. He was retired several years ago, having been employed in the washroom of the Juniata shops. He made his home with a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Catherine Brady, of 505 Sixth avenue. He is survived by two children, Albert J., of McSherrytown, and Mrs. Edward Cole, of Martinsburg, W.Va., also eighteen grandchildren. He has been a widower for forty-three years, and was a devout member of St. Mark's Roman Catholic church. Funeral services will be announced later.
