Foreman Dies At Residence John Edward Brashears, aged 77, of 313 Thirty-first street, well-known retired foreman in the Altoona works, died at his home at 2.45 o'clock yesterday morning after an extended illness. Mr. Brashears retired from the service of the Pennsylvania railroad on Dec. 31, 1938, after having served for 47 years and seven months. He entered the service on March 28, 1888, learning the trade of plumber, and subsequently served as a steamfitter and gang leader, as assistant foreman of the flue shop from 1918 to 1925, and then foreman of plumbers until his retirement. He was born in Baltimore, Md., Dec. 30. 1871, a son of Joseph R. and Emily (Barrett) Brashears, and came to Altoona with his parents when he was but 4 years old, residing here ever since. In his latter years in the railroad service he was affectionately known to his shopmates as "Pop." Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Laura (Burleigh) Brashears; one sister and one brother, Mrs. Laura C. Mehaffie of the city and Charles J. Brashears of Phlladelphia, and three nephews, C. Walton Brashears of Philadelphia, C. Edward and N. Kenneth Mehaffie, both of the city. Mr. Brashears was a member of the Eighth Avenue Methodist church and Sunday school, of Blair lodge, Knights of Pythias; the Retired Men's association and was a director of the Oak Ridge Cemetery association.
