The venerable lady passed peacefully away at her home on Blair street, Hollidaysburg, Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, from diseases incident to old age. She died on the eighty-first anniversary of her wedding day, St. Valentine's day. On December 9, 1916, she celebrated her 100th birthday and while lying in her bed was visited by many loving friends, who offered her their heartiest congratulations and brought her many gifts. She also received many post cards from friends far and near. "Grandmother" Brown was born in Franklin county on a farm near Chambersburg, December 9, 1816. She was the last of a large family, all of whom lived to a great age and a sister who died recently was 90 years of age. Her oldest son, who died a short time ago, if living, would have been 80 years old December 4 of last year, and the daughter with whom she lived, Mrs. Sarah Clapper, is in her 72nd year. The husband of Mrs. Brown died many years ago at the age of 68. Mrs. Brown in many ways was a remarkable woman. Until two years ago she was actively engaged in knitting and making quilts of beautiful design, and many residences far and near have been graced with the quilts which she has made. She was possessed of a remarkable memory and could remember many historic incidents. For the last two years her eyesight had failed until she was almost blind and also quite deaf. Her daughter read to her from the newspapers and she could converse with great intelligence upon the current topics of the day. "Grandmother" Brown was always a staunch Republican and one of her deepest regrets was that her favorite presidential candidate, Mr. Hughes, was defeated. She remembered and talked of Jackson's campaign. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made and will be announced later. The body was prepared for burial by Funeral Director Liebegott, of Duncansville. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday Morning, February 15, 1917 Hollidaysburg.
