Patterson Brown died at the home of his brother, David Brown, yesterday afternoon at 3.20 o'clock. Death was the result from injuries received by being caught between the bumpers of two freight cars near Williamsburg last fall. The deceased had attained his 52d year. He was a son of Zacharias Brown and was born and reared in this community. In his early life he was employed by the late Hon. Thaddeus Banks. While pursuing his labors about the law office of his employer, he amassed quite a store of legal lore, which proved of service to him in after life. He became a legal counsellor among the men of his race, and also a fiery and eloquent political speaker. During a visit to Pittsburg he became involved in a quarrel. He was prosecuted for the results of the quarrel. He refused the kindly offer of the presiding judge to assign him counsel and pleaded his own case so fervently before the jury that he secured an acquittal. Henry L. Brown was one of the first colored men to enlist in the famous Fifty-fourth regiment of Massachusetts volunteers, and it has been said by those who knew that Henry L. was a brave soldier and discharged his duties faithfully and well. He was in the front at the charge made upon Fort Wagner and yet was fortunate enough to come out of the storm of shot and shell unscathed. In politics Henry was a staunch republican and was active for the interests of the party which gave freedom to his race. He is survived by his brothers, David and William, of Hollidaysburg, and George, of Youngstown, Ohio. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made known. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Wednesday, February 13, 1895, page 4 The funeral services of the late Henry L. Patterson Brown will be held in the A.M.E. Zion church this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Murray post at 1 p.m., to attend the funeral. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, February 14, 1895, page 4 LOCAL BREVITIES.
