Second Oldest Minister of Church of the Brethren. GONE TO HIS REWARD. Left Record of Faithfulness - In His Day Recognized as Great Preacher and Expounder of The Gospel. In the death of Elder George W. Brumbaugh which occurred at 7:30 Thursday morning, March 9, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Levi Rhodes, Taylor township, near Roaring Spring, the Church of the Brethren has lost one of its oldest and best known ministers. He lived long past man's alloted [sic] time, and was taken away by diseases incident to advanced age. Deceased was born at Fredericksburg, Bedford county, (now Blair county) on August 6, 1827, and spent all his life in this county. For more than the average life of man Elder Brumbaugh had ministered to the spiritual needs of his people. His life was not an easy one for he looked after the five churches of Clover Creek for many years and in all kinds of weather he journeyed from one to the other preaching the gospel besides attending to all the other duties of a faithful minister. He ministered to the sick, attended the dying, buried the dead and offered consolation and advice to those in trouble. He was elected to the ministry in 1855 and advanced to the second degree in 1862 and ordained to an eldership in 1888. He had served almost sixty-two years in the ministry and was the second oldest in point or service in the entire brotherhood of the Church of the Brethren. During these years he watched over the span of many a life from the cradle to the grave. His contemporaries have mostly walked out the path that leads to the great beyond. George W. Brumbaugh was married to Elizabeth Nicodemus and to this union were born twelve children, six sons and six daughters. The wife, two sons and two daughters preceded him to the other shore. The following survive: Mrs. Harriet Gates, of Fredericksburg; Mrs. Mary Hagey, of Henrietta, now at Daytonia, Fla.; Mrs. Annie Rhodes, of Roaring Spring; Mrs. Mattie Boone, of Duncansville; Levi N. and George E. Brumbaugh, of Russellville, Huntingdon county; S. W. Brumbaugh, of Altoona; Frank N. Brumbaugh, of Green Bay, Wis. He is also survived by twenty-eight grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. The funeral took place Sunday, the cortege leaving the Rhodes' home at 9 o'clock and proceeding to the Clover Creek church where services were conducted. Interment was made in Brumbaugh cemetery.
