Burchfield, 88, 5305 Sixth Ave., Altoona, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Altoona Hospital after an expended illness. She was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Altoona, daughter of the late Walter G. and Bertha M. (Reed) Wissinger. She married Theodore D. Burchfield Aug 31, 1933, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Altoona. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Burchfield was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. She was a graduate of Altoona High School. Mrs. Burchfield retired in 1986 from Dr. Sandra Loychick's office as office manager. Before that, she was a medical secretary at Mercy Hospital. She was a member of the Altoona Area school board from 1976-94, serving as president in 1984 and 1985. She was a board member of the Altoona Area Public Library, where she was a volunteer in the reading program in the 1980"s and member of the Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 board of directors. She was a member of the Altoona Kiwanis Club, Son Secours-Holy Family Hospital Women's Auxiliary and Altoona Business and Professional Women's Club, where she served as president in 1994 and 1995. She was voted the "Woman of the Year" in 1992 by the Altoona BPW and YWCA. She was co-founder of "Tomorrow's Citizens," an organization for delinquent teens, from 1955-59, and was the first director at the Senior Center in 1962. In her later years, Mrs. Burchfield enjoyed her grandchildren, reading and playing Scrabble. She is survived by children: Robert A. Burchfield of Coalport, Judith A. Athey and husband, Peter, of Statesville, N.C., Ronald E. Burchfield and wife, Terri, of Hernando, Fla., David E. Burchfield and wife, Linda, of Duncansville, Marilyn J. Farabaugh of Altoona, J. Joseph Burchfield and wife, Judy, of Altoona, and Thomas R. Burchfield and wife, Chris, of Hollidaysburg; daughter-in-law, Dolores Burchfield of Altoona; 30 grandchildren: Deborah Ergler, Karen George, Robert Burchfield Jr., Kevin Burchfield, Sean Burchfield, Mark Burchfield, Krista Elvey, Daniel Green, Brian Burchfield, Lisa Verdi, Patrick Burchfield, Marci Lecaillon, Gregory Burchfield, David Burchfield Jr., Tina Saunders, Rick Burchfield, Jodie Burchfield, Shelly Stiver, John Farabaugh Jr., Kurt Farabaugh, Julie Hatch, Cheryl Hutchinson, Brian Farabaugh, John Farabaugh Jr., Kurt Farabaugh, Julie Hatch, Cheryl Hutchinson, Brian Farabaugh, Tracy Pellegrino, Audra Leonard, John Burchfield Jr., Theodore Burchfield III, Michael Burchfield, Jendi Burchfield and Charles Burchfield; and two step grandchildren: Jonathan and Matthew Athey. She was one of 15 children of which she had three surviving siblings: Helen M. Luckner and Shirley a. Ulrich, forth of San Diego, and Donn E. Wissinger of Escondido, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Theodore; a son, Theodore D. Burchfield Jr.; grandsons: Raymond G. Green II, Douglas M. Burchfield and Kevin Thompson; granddaughter Kelly P. Green; great-grandson, Ryan E. Ergler; son-in-law, Raymond G. Green; daughter- in-law, Theresa Burchfield; brothers: Walter, Herbert and Gene Wissinger; and sister, Marjorie Villane. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan 29, 2004, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Committal at Calvary Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan 28, 2004, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, (www.Stevensmortuary.com), where a vigil for the deceased will be held.
