(Skinny) Burford Sr., 80, of Box 103, RD 3, Tyrone, died Friday, February 3, at 6:10 a.m. at the Tyrone Hospital following a brief illness. He was born May 23, 1908, at Tyrone, the son of Allen G. and Rebecca Jane (Mayhue) Burford and on August 31, 1935, at the United Brethern Parsonage at Tyrone he was married to Marian L. Strunk who survives. Also surviving are four children: Mrs. Melvin (Mary) Naylor; James V. Burford Jr., and William Burford, all three of Erie, Pa.; Mrs. Joseph (Pauline) Murphy of Doylestown, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family. He was a life member of the United Methodist Church of the Good Shepherd where he was an usher. He formerly served as Superintendent of the Primary Department of the former United Brethren Church for many years. He was a member of the Tyrone Sportsmen, the Bald Eagle Fire Company and the Blazing Arrow Hook and Ladder Fire Company. He originally started in boy scouting in 1933, with Troop 27, BSA and in 1950, he organized and served as Cub Master for Cub Pack 27. He was a member of Cub Pack 27 committee and served as its chairman until 1987. For many years he also worked as a Webelo Assistant. He served as Chairman of the Pack 27 Silver Anniversary celebration in 1975. In 1983, he was honored with a special service at the Church of the Good Shepherd by Cub Pack 27 and the Penn Woods Council, BSA for his 50 years in scouting. It was with his help and guidance that many of the young scouts from Good Shepherd Church received their God and Country Award. He had been employed at the former Schaffer Meat plant in Tyrone and at United Home Dressed Meats, Altoona and retired in 1977 from Juniata Packing Company after 20 years service as a maintenance mechanic. Funeral service will be held Monday, February 6th, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd with Pastor Kraig L. Faust officiating. Interment will follow in Baughman Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
