Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, January 6, 1927, page 12 Motorist Gravely Hurt When Own Car Hits Him In Sudden Start Struck and knocked down by his own automobile shortly before 12 o'clock Friday night, Jack Burgher, 40 years old, of 900 Broadway, Juniata, received injuries which will probably cause his death, according to attending surgeons at the Altoona hospital, where he is a patient. He has been unconscious following his admittance to the institution, and his death is expected momentarily. Burgher, who is employed as a salesman by a check protectograph firm in Blair county, was in the act of placing on new license plates on his car at Green avenue and Tenth street, and was working on the front end of the machine when the machine suddenly started. It is the belief of the police bureau, who are conducting an investigation, that the man was in the act of cranking the car while in gear, which caused the automobile to go forward, striking him and knocking him to the pavement. Eye witnesses to the accident, in their version, said that the rear wheel of the car rested on the man's head, the machine tearing the skin at the back of the head. An X-ray examination taken of Burgher's injuries Saturday morning at the hospital, revealed a fracture of the skull and crush wounds of the chest. Several stitches were required to close a deep gash on the back of the head. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Monday, January 3, 1927, page 1
