Mrs. Elizabeth Burket, of Martinsburg, Takes Her Life. A very sad affair occurred in the town of Martinsburg Wednesday morning, and for the following particulars thereof we are indebted to our correspondent at that place, who writes: Mrs. Elizabeth Burket, aged 41 years, a very estimable lady, the wife of Mr. H. S. Burket, committed suicide at her home on West Allegheny street at 10 'clock Wednesday morning, by shooting herself through the head, expiring almost instantly. Mrs. Burket had been ailing for some considerable time, and during the fall months of November and December was taken to Philadelphia, where she was under treatment for about six weeks and was returned to her home on a fair way for recovery, but since her return had been the principal part of her time confined to her bed. The deceased was comfortably surrounded in life, with one of the kindest and most affectionate of husbands and everything that tends to remove life's burdens and make the pathway smooth and pleasant. Major Alex Bobb, justice of the peace, summoned the following jurors to hold the inquest: D. L. Bloom, foreman; J. C. Sanders, D. B. Stoner, D. L. Keagy, C. L. Zimmerman and Reuben Ott. These after making a full view of the premises and hearing the witnesses, rendered a verdict that "the deceased came to her death from a leaden bullet discharged from a revolver in her own hands." The sad act has cast a deep gloom over the entire community, and Mr. Burket, who is one of our leading influential citizens, has the sympathy of all. The funeral took place on Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Altoona Tribune, March 21, 1889
