(BURKHART), 1954 _________________________________________ GEORGE W. BURKHART Died at 9 o'clock yesterday morning, at his home two miles west of Canan's Station, of pneumonia, aged 43 years and 6 days. He is survived by his wife and four small children: Mary, Harrison, Grace and Florence; also by his mother and following brothers and sisters: Clinton D., Sarah and Inez of this city, Thomas G. and Jacob S. of Sugar Run. Funeral services were conducted at his late home at 2 o'clock this afternoon; interment was made in the Carson Valley cemetery. Altoona Mirror, November 18, 1895 ________ JACOB S. BURKHART A native of this city, where he had resided the greater part of his life conducting an undertaking business at 3965 Sixth avenue, South Altoona, for the last two years, died yesterday morning at 1.35 o'clock at the Mercy hospital, of pneumonia, having been admitted to the hospital May 8. He was born in this city April 9, 1867, and resided here all his life until fifteen years ago, when he went up to Gallitzin and embarked in the undertaking business. He lived there until two years ago, when he returned to this vicinity and established his business at South Altoona. Mr. Burkhart was a member of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, the Sons of Veterans, the Woodmen of the World and the Improved Order of Red Men, of which he was president of the Cambria county association. He organized the Gallitzin fire department for eight years. He was a member of the Lutheran church of Gallitzin and had been a consistent Lutheran by faith for the past twenty-seven years. His wife, Jennie Burkhart, and the following children survive: Mrs. C. M. Little of Blairsville Intersection and Mae, Hazel, Clair and George at home. Two brothers and two sisters survive, as follows: Clinton Burkhart of Altoona, Thomas of Llyswen, Mrs. V. Schreiber of Altoona and Mrs. Ines Connolly, also of this city. Two half-sisters, Mrs. Ellen Hahn of Coalport and Mrs. Mary Eckenlaub of Altoona, and one half-brother, William, also of this city survive. The funeral will be held with services at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Carson Valley church, followed by interment in the Carson Valley cemetery. The body was received from the hospital by Funeral Director Otto Gilden who prepared it for burial. Altoona Mirror, Monday, May 21, 1917 ________ MRS. MAGDELINE BURKHART Died of old age at 7 o'clock this morning at the residence of her son, Dr. S. B. Burkhart, Maple avenue and Thirty-first street. The deceased was born at Hillside, Blair county, and was aged 86 years. She had been a resident of this city for twenty-five years. Mrs. Burkhart had been for many years a consistent member of the German Baptist church. One son, Dr. S. B. Burkhart, of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. Riling, of Dwight, Ill, survives her. Funeral services will be held at the house at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon; interment in Carson Valley Cemetery. Altoona Mirror, September 22, 1900 ________ MRS. MARY A. BURKHART Mrs. Mary A. Burkhart, widow of Thomas G. Burkhart, died at the home of her cousin, William Thomas, Holsopple, Somerset county, at 12:45 a.m., Monday, of a heart ailment. She was born at Holsopple, October 18, 1858, a daughter of Samuel and Lydia Miller. She was a former resident of this section, having lived at South Altoona, prior to the death of her husband 10 years ago. Surviving are five sons, Mahon of Altoona: James and Robert, of Canan Station; Levi, of Eldorado, and Harvey, of Black Lick; four daughters, Mrs. B. I. Brubaker, Altoona; Mrs. Rachel Spade, Gallitzin; Mrs. Alice Hoover, Cross Keys, and Mrs. Sadie Wilt, Canan Station; one brother, William Reap, Newville; three sisters: Mrs. Sara Abrams, also of Newville Mrs. Nann Stuff, Myersdale, and Mrs. Scott Singer, Philadelphia; 34 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren. She was a member of the Brethren church. Funeral services will be conducted in the Sixth Avenue United Brethren church, at 1 p.m. tomorrow, in charge of the Rev. B. J. Waltz. Altoona Tribune, Wednesday, January 18, 1928, page 4 ________ MRS. REBECCA BURKHART Wife of Clinton D. Burkhart, died at her home, 407 Twenty-first street, at 8.30 o'clock last evening, of paralysis. She had been in poor health all winter, and early on the morning of Memorial Day, she suffered her first stroke. She was in a serious condition all day yesterday, and it is thought that she suffered another stroke. The deceased was born sixty-three years ago in Carson Valley, this county, and was the daughter of Abraham and Catharine Stoner. She came to this city with her husband thirty-five years ago. Surviving are her husband and three children, William F., of this city, and Robert G. and Mary C., at home; also the following brothers; Peter, of Altoona; Scott, of Allegheny township; Jacob S., of this city; and Daniel, of Connellsville. Her three oldest children preceded her to the grave. She was a member of the First Lutheran church. Altoona Mirror, June 10, 1912 ________ WILLIAM B. BURKHART William B. Burkhart, an aged and respected resident of this city, died at his residence, No. 2023 Ninth Avenue, at a quarter before 11 o'clock yesterday morning after an illness extending over several months, the direct cause of his death being Bright's disease of the kidneys, the deceased was born at Fort Littleton, Pa., March 11, 1813, and he was consequently aged 77 years, 1 month and 3 days at the time of his death. At an early age the deceased came to Blair county and for a number of years was a farmer in Logan township. At the breaking out to the rebellion he enlisted in Company F, 77th regiment, Colonel Wayne commanding, and after serving two years received an honorable discharge. About three years ago he came to this city where he resided continuously until his demise. For many years he was a consistent member of the German Baptist church and while health permitted was ever faithful to his religious duties. His aged wife and nine children survive and mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father. The funeral will leave the late residence at 1 o'clock to morrow, to proceed to the Carson Valley cemetery, where the interment will be made. HOOVER Mrs. Alice R. Hoover, of Duncansville R. D. 1, died at 4.10 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Mercy hospital where she was admitted June 8, after an extended illness. She was born at Sugar Run March 14,1884, a daughter of Thomas and Mary Burkhart, and was twice married. Her first husband, Sylvester Brubaker, died in 1907. Her second husband, Levi Hoover, died in 1952. Surviving are these children: Homer Brubaker of Detroit, Mrs. Eva Merrits of North Carolina, Nelson of Duncansville, R. D., Mrs. Mae Tierney, Mrs. Beatrice Shultz and Jacob Hoover, all of Altoona, George Hoover, Mrs. Olive Beard, Dean Hoover, and Brice Hoover, all of Duncansville, R. D., Mrs. Grace Snyder of Ohio, and Catherine Hoover of California; 27 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Hoover was a member of the Carson Valley Church of the Brethren. Friends will be received at the Liebegott funeral home, Duncansville from 8 o'clock this evening until 11 o'clock Saturday morning and thereafter at the church. Altoona Mirror, July 8, 1954
