"Red" Burkholder, 86, of Roanoke, VA, formerly of Bellwood, died Friday morning, March 12, 2004 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born May 28, 1917 in Bellwood, a son of the late Thomas A. and Helen E. (Estep) Burkholder. He married Thelma L. Root on Dec. 27, 1941 at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bellwood. She died March 8, 2001. He was preceded in death by brothers, Thomas G. and Lemont. Mr. Burkholder retired in 1985 as director of riding at Hollin's College, Roanoke with 26 years of service. He earned several prestigious awards for his lifetime achievement as a horseman. He was an army veteran serving during World War II in the army's remount service in Nebraska. Mr. Burkholder was a graduate of Bellwood High School. He was a member of the Bedford County Hunt Club and a lifetime member of the Rockbridge Hunt Club in Virginia. Mr. Burkholder enjoyed NASCAR racing. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 15 and 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. the time of the funeral service on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at the Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood with the Rev. T. Talbot-Moses officiating. Interment at the Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Guy E.
