Burns, 81, of 1147 6th Ave., Duncansville, retired school teacher and principal and long active in Masonic affairs, died unexpectedly in his sleep early today at his home. He was born at East Freedom on Aug. 12, 1884, a son of George and Matilda (Butler) Burns, and on Sept. 11, 1911, was united in marriage with Helen O. Dickson in the Newry Lutheran Church by the Rev. L. N. Fleck. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Amy E. Culbertson of Cross Keys and Mrs. Ivy M. Krider of Hagerstown, Md., and two grandsons. Mr. Burns was graduated from Juniata College in 1909 and earlier began teaching in 1902 in Freedom Twp., later serving in the Cross Keys and Canan Station schools, as principal of the New Paris, Duncansville, Greenwood and Lakemont schools, retiring in 1954. He presently was serving as assessor of Duncansville Borough where he earlier had served as a member of the school board and as school tax collector. A member of the Carson Valley Church of the Brethren, Mr. Burns was also a 50-year member of Portage Lodge, F&AM, having served as worshipful master in 1921 and secretary 1931-64; of Mount Moriah Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, which he served as high priest in 1929; Mountain Council, Royal and Select Masters; Mountain Commandery 10, Knights Templar, and Jaffa Shrine Temple.
