David Burns Run Down by Main Line Express in Altoona Yards. David W. Burns of 411 Cherry avenue, a freight brakeman employed in the Altoona yards, was probably fatally hurt in the yards at Ninth street at 11:40 this morning, being run down by the second section of Main Line express, Train No. 12, as it left the station eastbound. Burns was crossing the track and failed to see the approach of the passenger train, which struck him and hurled his body some distance. He was at once removed to the Altoona hospital, where an examination showed that he had sustained severe lacerations and contusions of the left arm and body, fractures of several ribs and a fracture of the left thigh. His condition this afternoon is extremely critical and death may result at any moment. Altoona Mirror, Altoona, Pa., Tuesday, October 27, 1908 [Good news! David W. BURNS, A former resident of Altoona but who has made his home in Edgewood, Pa., for the past several years, died at that place yesterday morning at 9.30 o'clock, death occurring at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Annie M. Fraser, with whom he resided. He suffered from a complication of diseases. Mr. Burns was born in Carson valley Aug. 16, 1852, and was employed as a Pennsy brakeman in the East Altoona yards for a period of fifty-one years, he having retired two years ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary E. Burns, one daughter, Mrs. Annie M. Fraser, and one son, Walter S. of the U.S. naval hospital in Philadelphia. One sister and three brothers also survive as follows: Mrs. H. R. Lang of Pittsburgh, J.C. Burns of this city, A. L. Burns of Huntingdon, Ind., and J. W. Burns of Gary, Ind. He was a member of the Second United Brethren church for the past twenty years and served as a steward of the church for a number of years. He was also affiliated with the Herbert Commandery, No. 141, Knights of Malta, the Twin City lodge No. 241, I.O.O.F., of Pittsburgh; Washington camp No. 31, P.O.S. of A., of Altoona; Blair lodge No. 281, Knights of Pythias, and No. 21, Eleanor of the Rebekahs. The remains will be brought here tomorrow afternoon and taken to the home of a cousin, C. J. Slogenhop of 208 East Fifth avenue. Funeral services will be held at 2.30 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Second United Brethren church. Interment will follow in Rose Hill cemetery.
