In the death of Mrs. Jane Burns, which event occurred at ten minutes of 11 o'clock on Thursday evening, there has been removed from Altoona one of the city's oldest inhabitants. She died at the time stated at her residence, No. 1013 Bridge street, aged 76 years. The cause of her death was a complication of diseases incident to an aged person, and when the final summons came she was fully prepared for the great change which must come to us all. For the past nine weeks she had been confined to her room. The deceased was born in county Louth, Ireland, and was there married. Coming to this country she, with her husband, Patrick Burns, resided for forty years in Woodbury, Bedford county, where in 1871, her husband died. A few years afterward Mrs. Burns came to Altoona, and for the past thirteen years had made it her home. She was the mother of twelve children - ten sons and two daughters. Six of these are dead and the names of those who now mourn the death of an affectionate mother are: William and Michael, of this city; Sylvester, of Woodbury, Albert, of Orbisonia; Mrs. Annie Mateer, of Altoona; and Mrs. Sarah Espenlaub, of Roanoke, Va. Mrs. Burns was a devoted member of the Catholic church, and had been during her entire life. Altoona Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Thursday, January 20, 1887, page 3 DEATH OF AN AGED LADY. Mrs. Jane Burns, mother of William and Michael Burns, the liverymen, died a few minutes after 10 o'clock last night, at her residence, No. 1013 Bridge street. Mrs. Burns was aged 76 years. She was born in County Louth, Ireland, and was married there to Patrick Burns, who died at Woodbury, Bedford county, in 1871. She came to this country about fifty years ago, and until she removed to this city, some twelve years ago, resided with her family at Woodbury. The old lady had long suffered from diseases incident to advanced age, and her death was not unexpected. She was a dutiful wife and a kind and affectionate mother, and though Providence granted her a long and useful life her death will be a great affliction to her children. She was a consistent Christian and a devoted member of St. John's Catholic church. Her surviving children are William, Michael, Mrs. Anna May Mateer, and Mrs. David Espenlaub, all of this city; Sylvester, of Woodbury, and Albert, of Orbisonia, Huntingdon county. Her eldest son, John Burns, Esq., died at St. Augustine, Cambria county, a few years ago. The funeral announcement will be made to-morrow. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Friday, January 14, 1887, page 4 The Funeral of Mrs. Jane Burns. The funeral of Mrs. Jane Burns, who died Thursday night, will take place from her late residence, on Bridge street, at 8.30 o'clock Monday morning. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St. John's cemetery. Sylvester, of Woodbury, Bedford county, and Albert of Orbisonia, Huntingdon county, arrived here yesterday, too late to see their mother alive. The old lady was aged 82 years, not 76 as stated yesterday. She preserved all her faculties to the last, and was fully prepared for her departure from earth.
