At 2.40 o'clock yesterday morning Michael Burns, junior member of the well known firm of Burns Bros., died at his home, 1013 Bridge street, of a complication of diseases, superinduced by an accident which befell him while out driving two years ago. Since then his health began failing and several weeks ago he was compelled to take his bed. Several days ago he began sinking, and despite the efforts of his physicians he grew worse and passed into the next world at the hour mentioned above. Michael Burns was born at Woodbury, Bedford county, June 14, 1846. He came to Altoona in 1871 and embarked in the livery business with Simon Replogle, now deceased, at the White Hall hotel stables. In 1873 he with his brother, W. H. Burns, entered into partnership in the business now conducted on Bridge street. He was unassuming, industrious and benevolent and during his long career made a host of friends who will learn of his death with much regret. The deceased was a veteran of the civil war and served with distinction as a corporal in company C, Two Hundred and Fifth Pennsylvania volunteer infantry. He was at one time an active member of the Empire volunteer hook and ladder company and took an interest in all things tending to the progress of the department. Mr. Burns never married and is survived by these brothers and sisters: William H. Burns and Mrs. A. M. Mateer, of Altoona; Albert Burns, of Orbisonia, Huntingdon county, and Mrs. S. J. Espenlaub, of Roanoke, Va. All, with the exception of the latter, were at his bedside when he passed away. He was a member of St. John's Catholic church, where mass will be celebrated Friday morning at 9 o'clock. Interment will be made in St. John's cemetery. Morning Tribune, Thursday, December 14, 1899
