BURNS [photo] Thomas Monroe Burns, aged 30, a native of Altoona and former resident of 2310 Beale avenue died at the Good Samaritan hospital, Philadelphia, on Wednesday morning of spinal meningitis, following an illness of over two months. He served Uncle Sam during the World war and while "over there" contracted influenza, from which he failed to recover. Word of the death was received in Altoona by Mrs. E. C. McGregor of 813 Twenty-third street, and a brother, Jesse Burns left at once, bringing the body to this city, services and interment to be held here. Thomas Monroe Burns was born in Altoona November, 1890, the son of Christopher Wesley and Sara Burns, both deceased. He was formerly employed at the Burns livery stable and later the Fourth street passenger car shop. [missing section] December, 1917 with Company I, 35th engineers, trained at Camp Grant, Rockford, Ill., and went overseas in January 1918. He saw active service overseas and returned to the states in May 1919. While "over there" he suffered from influenza. After receiving his discharge he was stricken ill while at work in this city and was removed to a Pittsburgh hospital, where he underwent an operation. He was at the institution for nine weeks. Two weeks ago he was removed to the Philadelphia hospital where he died. Before going to war the young man made his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Catherine Powell of 2310 Beale avenue. He is survived by the grandmother and four sisters and three brothers, as follows: Mrs. William Ritchey, Mrs. Roy Ritchey, Mrs. James Heinbaugh, all of this city, and Mrs. Robert Miller of Attapulgus, Ga., and [remainder missing]. Funeral services will be held there at 2.30 tomorrow afternoon.
