Burns, a prominent liveryman of Altoona, died suddenly as he sat in his office at his stables on Saturday. The cause of death was heart disease. Mr. Burns was born at Woodbury, Bedford county, June 2, 1839, being the son of Patrick and James Burns. He removed to Altoona in 1872 and embarked in the livery business at the stables of the White Hall hotel. Later he acquired a property on Bridge street and formed a partnership with his brother, Michael Burns, which terminated upon the death of the latter, December 13, 1899. During the war Mr. Burns served in Company I, Twenty-second Pennsylvania Cavalry. He was a good soldier. Mr. Burns never married. One brother, Albert, of Orbisonia, and two sisters, Mrs. A. M. Mateer, of Altoona, and Mrs. S. J. Espenlaub, of Roanoke, Va., survive him. In politics he was a Democrat. He was a member of the Catholic church and until recent years belonged to the Grand Army of the Republic. Bedford Gazette, Bedford, Pa., December 12, 1902
