Burns, 79, 605 E. 25th Ave., died unexpectedly late Monday afternoon, Aug. 25, 1997, at Altoona Hospital. He was born July 27, 1918, in Altoona, the son of Samuel I. And Annie M. (Reifsteck) Burns. He married Thelma Jean Leslie Sept. 3, 1939, in Cumberland, Md. Mr. Burns was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church. He retired as an engineer from Conrail in November 1981 after 42 years of service. Mr. Burns was a member of the Juniata Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, the Sinking Valley Country Club and the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers. His hobbies included woodworking, golfing and Penn State football. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a fireman aboard the USS Mount Vernon. Surviving are his wife; five daughters: Donna J. Gates of Wilmington, Del., Susan L. Dinges of Hollidaysburg, Dorothy J. Eicher of Carmel, Ind., and Janis E. Rubine and Jacqueline L. "Jackie" Reiger, both of Altoona; a son, William D. of Altoona; two sisters: Rosemay Chapman of Arlington, Va., and Alma Wachter of Deer Creek Lake, Md.; 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Daniel R. Myers Funeral Home. BURNS - Services for William M. Burns of 605 E. 25th Ave. will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Daniel R.
