[photo] Veteran P.R.R. Gang Foreman Dies at Home Thomas E. Butterbaugh Sr., 84, former assessor of the 2nd Ward and long an enthusiastic sportsman, died yesterday afternoon in the home of his son, Thomas Jr., of 112 8th Ave., Juniata. He was born in Allegheny Furnace March 27, 1883, a son of Calvin and Matilda (Benton) Butterbaugh, and on Oct. 20, 1902, married Mesia Reffner who died March 23, 1953. Surviving are nine children, Mrs. Georgetta Irvin, Mrs. Elizabeth Winegardner and Mrs. Tressie Madden of Hollidaysburg, Mrs. Madeline Durio and Mrs. Jane Bender of Altoona, Thomas of Juniata, Mrs. Bessie Weber and Mesia of Bellemead Drive and Mrs. Ruth Price of Frankstown Road; 10 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Butterbaugh was a member of the First Church of the Brethren and Odd Fellows and retired as a gang foreman in the passenger car shop in 1949 after 49 years of service. As a young man, Mr. Butterbaugh was a skilled boxer, losing only one of 41 bouts, served as manager of the Merchants baseball team in the City League, the car shop team and an independent club that toured for a number of years and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
