Ninth St., Reightown, Bellwood died Monday evening, March 7, 2005 at Altoona Regional Health System Altoona Hospital Campus. He was born Feb. 21, 1916 in Antis Township, a son of the late William Alfred and Alice Ida (Taylor) Campbell. He married Effie Jane Yingling on June 3, 1940 in Carlisle. She died July 28, 1987. Mr. Campbell is survived by a son William A. Jr. of Pittsburgh; a daughter: Jane Collins and husband, Homer of Naperville, Ill.; three grandchildren: Steve, Mike and Lizzy Collins; and longtime companion and friend: Evelyn Zitsch of Bellwood. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters. He was the former owner of Campbell's Gulf Station, Bellmeade. Mr. Campbell served Antis Township for more than 40 years, retiring as superintendent in April of 1983. During his 18 years as superintendent he took part in the growth of Antis Township from the improved roadways to the influx of job creating companies. In addition, he served as a supervisor, off and on, from January 1960 to January 2000, serving as vice chairman and chairman of the board. He was devoted to Antis Township, it's residents and all of the employees he worked with. Mr. Campbell formerly acted as the Civil Defense Director for Bellwood and Antis Township and was appointed by the Governor as Emergency Preparedness Director. He also acted as coordinator for the Dept. of Environmental Resources and the US Army Corps of Engineers. He formerly served as a Township representative to the Governmental Advisory Board of the Blair County Planning Commission and the County's Sanitary Administration Committee. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Bellwood. Mr. Campbell was a member of the Logan Lodge F&AM and Altoona Consistory of the Scottish Rite. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Mr. Campbell was an avid conservationist/environmentalist always striving to keep Pennsylvania beautiful. He had a love for all animals. Mr. Campbell was instrumental in initiating the development of the Bells Gap Rail Trail project. He also enjoyed traveling and leatherwork. He was a mentor to many young people and was very active in the community, especially in promoting the rights of the disabled. His greatest love was his family. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, March 10 at the Jon C. Russin Funeral Home, Bellwood. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, March 11, 2005 at the funeral home by Pastors Paul Sweitzer and Donna Vaux. Interment at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood.
