Carland, a brakeman, employed on the Pittsburg division and residing at 2201 Twelfth avenue, was almost instantly killed yesterday afternoon about 3:30, near South Fork, by being hurled from the top of a box car to an adjoining track. Brakeman Carland had left his home Sunday night to join his crew for a run to Pittsburg. He kissed his wife and child good bye, telling them that he would be home as soon as his crew returned to Altoona. He was brought back a corpse yesterday afternoon. As the train on which Carland was a brakeman was passing SO tower, near South Fork, an air hose broke and Carland, who was standing on top of a car was thrown to the tracks by the sudden stopping of the train. He struck a rail with his head, death resulting in a few minutes. Andrew A. Carland was born in Gallitzin 24 years ago and was a son of Henry and Elizabeth Carland. For three years and eight months he has been employed as a brakeman on the Pittsburg division. Several years ago he moved to this city and he and his wife and child boarded at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. H. Lane of 2201 Twelfth avenue. Besides his parents, wife and child, he is survived by four brothers and four sisters as follows: Charles, Harry, and Elmer Carland of Gallitzin, William Carland of Minnesota. Mrs. J. H. Lane of this city, Mrs. Della McGill of Gallitzin, Mrs. Dora Fuller of Wehrum and Miss Emma Carland of Gallitzin. He was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic church of Summit, the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Pennsylvania railroad relief association. The remains were brought to this city and prepared for burial by Undertakers Hickey & O'Neil who took the body to the home of Mrs. Lane, where he boarded. Tomorrow morning the remains will be taken to Summit where interment will be made. Brown of Washington Township, Cambria County. The child mentioned in the obit was Oliver, his son.
